Sue Carney delivers her annual guest lecture to 3rd year forensic science undergraduates at the University of Central Lancashire for the third successive year. Entitled 'The Forensic Investigation of Sexual Offences', this lecture offers an insight into the difficulties and limitations surrounding the interpretation of forensic evidence in sexual assault and rape scenarios. As Sue explains to students, "Sexual assault cases are likely to be the most difficult forensic interpretations you will carry out."

Sue Carney attends Reinvent Law at The CBI Conference Centre, London. This crowd-sourced conference offered eclectic views on the 'four pillars of innovation' in legal practice and the law industry: Law, Technology, Design, and Delivery. It was also an opportunity to meet friend and collaborator, Alice de Sturler, who delivered a presentation on using blogs to give cold cases a web presence. Alice runs Defrosting Cold Cases, for which sue acts as 'in house' forensic experts and has written a number of articles.

Lead Judge in World Skills UK Forensics Competition

Sue Carney is lead judge in the World Skills UK forensics competition. The first heat is held at the old Bolton police station. Forensic students from the University of Central Lancashire take part in mock crime scene examinations held in the cells, closely observed by the judging team, comprising three experienced forensic experts, headed by Sue Carney of Ethos Forensics. This is the first forensic competition in World Skills UK, set up by Complete Policing, Defence and Medical Solutions.

Ethos Forensics give a guest lecture to Sheffield Hallam University forensic undergraduates and postgraduates, entitled "The Role of the DNA Expert Witness". This lecture takes the basics of forensic DNA profiling as a starting point and expands upon such issues as evidential significance, statistical interpretation, the pitfalls of the prosecutor's and defender's fallacies and the presentation of DNA evidence in court by examining some of the landmark Court of Appeal rulings in DNA cases along with the real life professional experiences of a DNA expert.
